A photo book is digital photos, printed directly onto the page. A photo album is an empty book you fill with prints you already own. Choose a photo book for photos on your phone. Choose an album for loose prints you want to keep or rearrange. That’s the short answer. The longer one depends on where your photos are now, what you want to spend and how long you want the result to last.

What’s the difference between a photo book and a photo album?

A photo book is designed and printed as a finished object. You choose your photos, arrange them into layouts (or let an app do it), add captions, and the whole thing is printed and bound like a book from a bookshop. Nothing moves once it’s made.

A photo album is a container. It arrives empty, with sleeves, pockets, adhesive or card pages, and you fill it with prints. You can add, remove and reorder photos whenever you like, but you need the prints first.

Printed photo books vs slip-in photo albums: how do they compare?

A photo book looks more polished: photos can be any size, several to a spread or full-bleed across both, with text, dates and titles built into the design. It’s slimmer and lighter than an album holding the same number of photos, with no sleeves or card mounts adding bulk.

A slip-in album is more flexible and more hands-on. Every photo is usually the same size, set by the pockets, and captions are handwritten on a label or the page. Its strength is that it can change: swap a photo, add new ones, or take one out to frame. For some people, slotting prints in by hand is part of the pleasure. If that sounds like you, our guide to scrapbooks covers a more creative take on the same idea.

Is a photo book or a photo album cheaper?

At first glance an album looks cheaper. A basic slip-in album costs less, but it’s empty. Add the cost of printing every photo inside it and the totals come much closer, especially if you’re filling a large album with 100 or more prints.

A photo book’s price covers printing, design and binding. A 20-page Hardcover Popsa Photo Book is around £40 at full price, with extra pages charged individually. You only pay for the pages you use, and you can order a second copy for a relative for much less effort than filling a second album.

If your photos are already printed, the album is the cheaper option, because you aren’t paying to print them again.

Which lasts longer: a photo book or a photo album?

Both can last decades if they’re stored well, away from direct sunlight, heat and damp. They age in different ways, though.

A printed photo book has no loose parts, so photos can’t slip out, fade unevenly or get lost. The main wear point is the spine, so choose a hardcover if it’ll be handled often. Because the book exists as a digital file, you can order a replacement if it’s damaged.

An album’s lifespan depends on its materials. Cheap plastic sleeves and the old self-adhesive “magnetic” pages can yellow, stick to prints and damage them over time. If you choose an album, look for acid-free, PVC-free pages labelled as archival or photo-safe. The prints themselves are irreplaceable unless you keep the original files.

Is a photo book or an album better for phone photos?

A photo book, almost always. If your photos are on your phone, an album means ordering prints, waiting for them, then sorting and filling the sleeves. A photo book goes straight from your camera roll to the printed page.

Phone photos also come in a mix of shapes, including portrait, landscape, square and screenshots, which fixed album sleeves don’t handle well. A photo book layout can fit each photo at its best size. With Popsa’s app, layouts are arranged automatically, so most books are ready to order within an hour of choosing your photos.

Is a photo album better for printed photos you already have?

Usually, yes. If you have a box of prints from film cameras or old holidays, an album lets you display the originals without scanning anything. It’s the simplest way to get them out of the drawer and into view.

The exception is when you want copies. If several family members want the same collection, scanning the prints into a photo book means everyone gets one, and the fragile originals stay safe.

Books for new memories

Our recommendation

Choose a photo book if your photos are digital, you want a finished keepsake or a gift, or you’d like more than one copy. It’s the better choice for holidays, weddings, a baby’s first year and annual family books.

Choose an album if your photos are printed, you want to keep adding to it, or you enjoy arranging prints by hand.

Many families end up with both: albums for inherited prints, photo books for everything since. If you’re ready to make a book, start with a Popsa Photo Book, or browse our photo book ideas for inspiration.

Preguntas frecuentes

Is a photo book the same as a photo album?

No. In everyday speech people use the terms interchangeably, but a photo book is printed with the photos on the pages, while a photo album holds separate prints.

Can I put photos in a photo book after it’s printed?

No. The photos are printed onto the pages, so the content is fixed. If you want to add photos later, make a new volume. Many people make one book a year.

Do photo books fade?

Printed photo books are no more prone to fading than standard prints. Keep them out of direct sunlight, and they’ll keep their colour for many years.

What’s better for a wedding: a photo book or an album?

For a modern wedding, a photo book usually fits better, since the photos come from your photographer and guests’ phones. A Layflat Photo Book lets wide shots run across both pages without a gap in the middle.
