If you’ve ever kept ticket stubs in a drawer or tucked a pressed flower into a diary, you already understand the instinct behind scrapbooking. It’s a long-standing way of holding on to memories, and it’s still loved by people who enjoy making things by hand. But it’s also a substantial commitment of time and materials, and it isn’t the only way to turn photos and keepsakes into something lasting. This guide explains what a scrapbook is, what making one involves, and when a Photo Book might do the job better.

What a scrapbook is

A scrapbook is a handmade album that combines photos with other keepsakes and decoration to tell the story of a person, an event or a period of time. Where a photo album simply holds pictures in sleeves or on pages, a scrapbook mixes them with memorabilia such as tickets, postcards, letters, maps, wristbands and children’s drawings, along with handwritten notes, stickers, patterned paper and other embellishments. Each page is usually designed by hand, so no two scrapbooks look the same.

The idea is centuries old. People have long pasted cuttings, letters and souvenirs into blank books, and the Victorians were particularly keen on it. Mark Twain even patented a self-pasting scrapbook in the 1870s. Modern scrapbooking, with themed papers, specialist tools and acid-free materials, became popular in the late twentieth century, alongside newer styles such as junk journals and digital scrapbooking.

Made by hand

What you need to make one

At its simplest, you need an album, your photos, some glue and a pen. Most scrapbookers build up a wider kit over time. The album itself might be a spiral-bound book, a ring binder or a post-bound album with removable pages, and prices range from roughly £10 to £40 or more. On top of that come printed photos, patterned and plain card, adhesive, scissors or a paper trimmer, and decorative extras like stickers, washi tape and stamps.

It’s worth paying attention to materials if you want your scrapbook to last. Look for acid-free and lignin-free paper and card, and photo-safe adhesive, because ordinary paper and glue can yellow over time and damage the photos stuck to them. If you’re using irreplaceable original prints, use copies instead and keep the originals stored safely elsewhere. A basic starter set costs around £30 to £50, but enthusiasts often spend far more.

How long one actually takes

Most guides skip this part. A single scrapbook page, with photos chosen, trimmed and arranged, embellishments added and captions written, typically takes anywhere from 30 minutes to two hours, depending on how detailed you like to be. A 20-page scrapbook of a family holiday could therefore take between 10 and 40 hours, spread over weeks or months. That doesn’t include printing the photos and gathering materials first.

For people who love it, that time is the point. Scrapbooking is a creative, absorbing and often social hobby, with crafting groups and “crops” where people meet to work on their pages together. But if what you want is the finished book, and the idea of 20 hours at the kitchen table feels daunting, it’s worth knowing the alternatives.

Scrapbook vs Photo Book

On time, the difference is clear. A scrapbook takes hours per page, while a Photo Book made in an app like Popsa can be finished in minutes, because the app arranges your photos into a first layout. You can then spend as much or as little time as you like adjusting pages and adding captions.

On cost, a single scrapbook can work out cheaper than a Photo Book if you already own the materials, but a first scrapbook with a new album, printed photos and supplies often costs as much or more. A Photo Book has one clear price, set by size, cover and page count, and printing your photos is included.

On durability, a well-made Photo Book is bound, printed on thick paper and has no loose parts, so it stands up well to handling. A scrapbook built with archival materials can also last generations, but raised embellishments, bulky memorabilia and anything glued with non-archival adhesive make it more fragile. Scrapbooks are also one of a kind, which adds to their appeal but means they can’t be replaced if lost or damaged, whereas a Photo Book can be reordered or printed in multiple copies for family members.

On the result, the two feel different. A scrapbook is tactile and personal, with layers, textures and handwriting you can run your fingers over. A Photo Book is cleaner and more polished, with your photos printed edge to edge, and it sits neatly on a bookshelf.

When scrapbooking is the better choice

Scrapbooking wins when the making matters as much as the result. If you enjoy crafting, want a relaxing project to do with children, or like a hobby you can pick up and put down, a scrapbook gives you something a Photo Book can’t. It’s also the better choice when your memories are mostly physical objects rather than photos, such as concert tickets, letters, pressed flowers or a child’s early drawings, because a scrapbook holds the real thing rather than a picture of it.

Scrapbooks also make wonderful one-off gifts, like a book of messages from friends for a leaving present or a wedding guest book filled with notes and Polaroids, where the handmade quality is exactly what makes it special.

How to get a similar look in a Photo Book

If you like the personality of a scrapbook but not the hours, you can capture much of it in a Photo Book. Start by photographing your memorabilia. Tickets, handwritten notes, maps, postcards and drawings all look great as images, particularly photographed in daylight on a plain background, and you can place them on the page alongside your photos. Captions do the job of scrapbook journaling, so use them to add names, dates, quotes and the details behind each photo.

Mixing layouts helps too. Pair a full-page photo with a page of smaller images and a scanned note, and use coloured borders and themes to give sections their own feel. The result keeps the personal feel of a scrapbook while being quicker to make, easier to copy for family and more durable on the shelf. Veelgestelde vragen

What is the difference between a scrapbook and a photo album?

A photo album holds photos, usually in sleeves or on plain pages, with little or no decoration. A scrapbook combines photos with memorabilia, handwriting and decorative elements, and each page is designed by hand.

What is the difference between a scrapbook and a Photo Book?

A scrapbook is made by hand with physical photos, papers and keepsakes glued onto its pages. A Photo Book is designed digitally and professionally printed and bound, with your photos, captions and any scanned memorabilia printed directly onto the pages.

Is scrapbooking expensive?

It can be as cheap or as expensive as you like. A basic album and supplies can cost around £30 to £50, but costs increase as you buy more papers, embellishments and tools, and you’ll also need to print your photos.

How do I stop a scrapbook from damaging my photos?

Use acid-free and lignin-free paper and photo-safe adhesive, avoid ballpoint pens directly on photos, and consider using copies of irreplaceable originals.
