Why do screenshots and WhatsApp photos print badly?
Messaging apps are the most common cause of disappointing prints. WhatsApp, like most messaging apps, compresses photos to send them quickly, reducing pixel dimensions and detail. On a phone screen you won’t notice. On paper, the photo can look soft, blotchy or pixelated.
If a friend sent you a photo you want to print, ask them for the original. WhatsApp has an HD option when sending photos, and sending a photo as a document keeps the original file. Shared albums in iCloud or Google Photos also usually keep more quality than a chat message does.
Screenshots have a different problem. A screenshot is only as big as your phone’s screen, so it’s lower resolution than a camera photo. It’s also tall and narrow, which rarely suits a standard print, and it often captures the time, battery level or a message bar. If someone sent the photo, ask for the photo, not a screenshot.
